Keep the Flat more spread out layout, but have 3 tabs on the top of the page (like a site created in iWeb). Then whenever a tab is chosen keep the same page layout but refresh the content. As for implementing the Twitter/Facebook connect that is a great idea, although the community idea I believe should been connected to your ning site. I'm not too sure on the customizable options of ning, but re-design that UI and use that as the faceplate but the URL should be a hang on to your actual blog. (eg) ijustine.com/community. So you're redirecting the page to another server... Use a fine, thin font like Justine used for a YouTube banner earlier this year. Anyway.. They're just a few idea's that I'm sure you've already thought of!
